Dr. Jonathan Choi is Chairman of the Hong Kong-based Sunwah Group, Chairman of the Toronto-listed Sunwah International Limited, Chairman of the Hong Kong-listed Sunwah Kingsway Capital Group and Chairman of the Vietnam VinaCapital. Dr. Choi’s vision and strong determination has propelled his family company to the forefront of Hong Kong corporations, culminating in the globalised and diversified Sunwah Group we see today.
Dr. Choi’s dedication and contribution to his home country and the society is evident in the wide range of public positions he holds. These include: Standing Committee Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) of the PRC, Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Standing Committee Member of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, Economic Advisor to the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Executive Director of the China Overseas Friendship Association, HK, China's Representative of Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Business Advisory Council, Council Member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong - Vietnam Chamber of Commerce, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong - Korea Business Council, Honorary Ambassador of Foreign Investment Promotion for the Republic of Korea, Chairman of the China-India Software Association, Chairman of the China Hong Kong Israel Technology Cooperation and Promotion Center, Chairman of the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence of the Michigan State University, Chairman of the Guangdong-HK-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Union, and Co-Chair of the Belt & Road Industrial and Commercial Alliance.
Being Chairman of the 46th and 47th Term Boards since 2008 and re-elected Chairman of the 50th Term board 2016 of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Choi steered the Chamber to enhance its position as an international trading platform. By utilizing his own international networks, Dr. Choi has done tremendous initiatives to foster economic exchanges and collaborations between Hong Kong, Mainland China and the world.
Dr. Choi is also a Court or Council Member of a number of universities including the Fudan University, the Nanjing University, the United College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Macau. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Choi and through Sunwah Foundation has supported various science and educational institutions, cultural facilities and foundations in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. He is the founder of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Honorary Academician Foundation, the Guangdong Sun Wah Education Institute and the Sun Wah International Business School of the Liaoning University.
Dr. Choi has been awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS), the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) and Justice of the Peace (JP) by the HKSAR Government for his meritorious public and community service, particularly for his contribution to the education field and the promotion of economic ties between Mainland China and Hong Kong. In 2005, he was conferred the Honorary Doctor of Humanities by the Michigan State University in the United States. He became a University Fellow of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2007. He was also conferred the Honorary Professor by the University of Glamorgan in the United Kingdom in 2009, the Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences by the Lingnan University in Hong Kong in 2011, the Honorary Doctor by the Vietnam National University in Hanoi in 2013, and the Honorary Doctor of MBA by the DeMontfort University in UK, the Honorary Doctor of Law by the University of Alberta in Canada in 2015, the World Outstanding Chinese Award by the United World Chinese Association in 2014. He was also awarded the Friendship Order by the Vietnam Government in 2015, the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2017, and the Japan Foreign Minister's Commendation Award in 2017. He is also an Honorary Citizen of Guangzhou, Shenyang, Zhongshan, Jinggangshan and Changjiajie. He has been invited to meet with Chinese officials of the Central Government in appreciation of his support for educational and economic development in China.
